Here is the first one, a Jagdpanzer 38(t) mit 2cm FlaK 38. As WWII wore on, German engineers attempted all sorts of conversions of existing armored vehicles to help shore up the war effort. The Czech-built Jagdpanzer 38(t) was one chassis commonly used, and an antiaircraft vehicle was one version that was planned. As the name Jagdpanzer 38(t) mit 2cm FlaK 38 signifies, it mounted a 20mm cannon.

The vehicle kit incorporates brand new elements such as an upper hull accurately built to contemporary standards. Also new are the engine deck and road wheels. As an open-topped vehicle, interior detail is visible in the fighting compartment, with a new firewall and mount for the FlaK 38. Photo-etched parts are included for refining details. Besides, it's option to build such a vehicle converted on either a normal Hetzer or a Bergepanzer 38(t). Indeed, the Jagdpanzer 38(t) mit 2cm FlaK 38 is an exotic beast that has never before been available in plastic. Although the Pz.Kpfw.I didn't have a long combat history, its chassis proved suitable for uses other than those of a tank. One such use was the Flakpanzer I, a self-propelled antiaircraft cannon. It had the advantage of being armored and possessing cross-country mobility. The Sd.Kfz.101 Flakpanzer I was modified from Panzer I Ausf.A tanks by removing the gun turret and installing a single-barreled 2cm FlaK 38 gun. The engine deck and hull were modified as well. Only 24 such Flakpanzer vehicles were produced, and they were subsequently assigned to Fla.Bataillon 614(mot) in May 1941. However, all had met their demise by the end of the Battle of Stalingrad in 1943.

Dragon has reengineered its 1/35 scale Flakpanzer I plastic kit in a new Premium Edition variant. It builds upon the success of the previous kit, but it has received several important updates. These include an improved storage box, which reproduced with both internal and external details. This storage box fits on the Sd.Ah.51 trailer, a piece of equipment that was normally towed behind the armored vehicle. Plus the kit features a new driver's seat and controls in the driver's compartment.

In addition, the frontal armor has received the Razor Edge treatment to give it a true-to-scale thickness. Several photo-etched parts give greater realism, including a photo-etched exhaust cover and spent-shell cage on the cannon. To make the modeler's job easier, the kit employs Dragon's patented Magic Tracks. Based on the Czech-designed 38(t) Ausf.M chassis with mid-mounted engine, the fighting compartment was mounted at the rear of the vehicle. The Flakpanzer was armed with a single 2cm FlaK38 cannon of L/112.5 caliber, and was supplied with 1040 ammunition rounds onboard. As an interim Flakpanzer design, it had obvious inadequacies such as limited armor protection for the crew and a lack of firepower from the small main armament. Thus, BMM only produced 141 such vehicles between November 1943 and February 1944. Many of them saw combat on the Western Front in units like the 12th SS Panzer Division “Hitlerjugend.” The top armored sections could fold down to allow 360^(o) traverse of the cannon at low elevations. This also meant the weapon could be used against ground targets.

Dragon has created a Late Production model of the Flakpanzer 38(t) auf Selbstfahrlafette 38(t) Ausf.M in 1/35 scale. This tracked kit has some stunning detail, and features a highly accurate miniature replica of the FlaK38 cannon. The cannon can be displayed with the gun elevated at 0 ^(o), 20 ^(o), 40 ^(o) or 60^(o), and it also features new hand wheels and gun-sight bracket. The gun barrel is slide molded, which enables incorporation of a hollow muzzle. Just like the real vehicle, modelers can depict the fighting compartment armored shields raised or lowered. The spent-shell case is made from photo-etched metal, and Dragon’s patented Magic Tracks take the bore out of assembling the track runs. This is a fine model of a late-production version of the Flakpanzer 38(t), and it will look impressive in any vignette or diorama.

Dragon is releasing a useful new 1/35 scale kit of a famous German truck of the WWII era. By 1944, more than 130,000 of these 3t 4x2 truck platforms had been manufactured in Germany. The truck type was widely used by the Wehrmacht and other units throughout the war, and the tracked Maultier version was even produced to help deal with the harsh road conditions prevalent on the Eastern Front.
