As its core, Blitzkrieg involved the integrated use of mechanized units containing tanks, infantry, artillery and airpower. When combined, these assets had the devastating ability to swiftly pierce enemy lines and keep opponents off-balance. This innovative German strategy was first seen in the invasion of Poland in September 1939, and it also proved highly effective in the invasion of the Low Countries and France in 1940. Dragon has produced a novel set of 1/35 scale figures that will enable modelers to recreate an imaginary scene from this early period of the war.

The set contains four figures from the “Ghost Division.” This was the moniker given to Erwin Rommel’s 7th Panzer Division because of the speed with which it moved during the invasion of France, with even the German High Command unable to keep up with its progress. Three of the figures are tank crewmen and the remaining figure is an infantryman. The set permits the creation of two separate episodes. The first sees a lightly wounded tanker being escorted to safety by a comrade. Such a scene is not easy to engineer by oneself because of the complicated task of blending two figures, but Dragon provides the ideal solution after completing and tooling a highly demanding master. The second pair of figures features a tanker conversing with a soldier, and such is their versatility that they will easily assimilate into just about any diorama. The figures wear typical early-war uniform items like panzer berets from the 1940 Blitzkrieg era. Sharply molded and realistically sculpted, these German figures will contribute much to an interesting Blitzkrieg scene involving some of Dragon’s panzer kits.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/6654box2025_1400x_cfb22377-6fe0-4776-a75c-6f96bcfdd917.jpg?v=1751696761
dragon-6279-1-35-german-tank-hunters-eastern-front
German Tank Hunters (Eastern Front)

As the Soviet T-34 tank rumbled along the snow-coated street, its steel track treads crumbled the rubble into powder. Lurking in the shadows, a figure raised his weapon and took careful aim at the monstrous steel hulk bearing down on him. Suddenly he fired, the Ofenrohr (“Stove Pipe”) emitting a large cloud of smoke. A rocket streaked towards the tank and penetrated its sloped armor, the vehicle clanking to a stop as flames and smoke erupted from its interior. The German tank hunter team quickly scuttled away to find a new position.

This type of scene was repeated over and over as German defenses were inundated by Soviet and Allied tanks in the latter part of WWII. With a dire shortage of tanks and tank destroyers, one smaller but still effective German weapon was the Panzerschreck (“tank terror”) or Raketenpanzerbu‘chse (“rocket tank rifle”, or RPzB). This antitank rocket launcher of 88mm caliber, from which the American bazooka was copied, was employed by infantry. Dragon’s newest figure set offers two Panzerschreck teams, one wearing winter uniforms and the other attired in summer uniforms. Their versatility allows them to be used for either Eastern or Western Front dioramas. As a Gen2 set, the figures are crisply detailed and have anatomically vivid poses. Likewise, their associated gear is sharply molded. Their RPzB 54 weapons with characteristic blast shields are amazingly detailed, the most accurate yet thanks to their Gen2 status. As part of Operation Market Garden, the aim of this famous battle was to capture the Arnhem Bridge over the Lower Rhine in Holland. The successful capture of a series of bridges, culminating in Arnhem Bridge, would facilitate an Allied advance into Germany itself. Unfortunately for the Allies, the German defenders put up stiff resistance and rushed reinforcements to the area, finally smothering the airborne assault. In the final analysis, this was a victory for German forces, although Allied forces did create a salient into Holland that they could eventually exploit.

The latest 1/35 scale figure set from Dragon depicts four German servicemen who are participating in the Battle of Arnhem. The four figures are cleanly and sharply sculpted by the famous Japanese sculptor Hirano Yoshitaka for maximum lifelikeness, and together they form a vignette straight out of the box. Two wounded tankers have survived the destruction of their tank by British paratroopers, and they now aid each other as they make their way to a casualty treatment centre. These bandaged figures are designed to fit together as a pair in this realistic pose. They are supported by two panzergrenadiers from one of the units thrown into Arnhem to stop the British. These remaining figures are well made in terms of pose, proportion and detail, including one soldier offering a cigarette to the wounded tankers. In less than two months of rapid-moving armored warfare, the aforementioned countries had surrendered, and British forces had been ignominiously evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk.
