Supporting the pilots were many more men and women from across the UK who served as ground crew, performing the vital tasks of refuelling, rearming and maintaining fighter aircraft in between sorties. This was a particularly hazardous task during the Luftwaffe attacks and hit-and-run raids upon RAF airfields. In addition to refuelling and re-arming Spitfires and Hurricanes with thousands of .303 rounds, these hard-working people also patched up damaged fighters, started the engines before sorties, and assisted pilots despite the hectic pace of the battle. The bombing raids and strafing attacks claimed many lives and many more ground crew members were injured, but they carried on, both through the battle and throughout the remainder of the war, often working both in the blazing sun and freezing cold, ensuring that the RAF had the means to defend the skies of Great Britain.

This kit includes:

8 Ground Crew Figures
2 Pilot Figures
1 Trolley Accumulator
1 Oil Bowser
1 Ammunition Trolley Wheel Chock
Miscellaneous Support Equipment

Please Note: The Hawker Hurricane is not included, this is available separately as A05127 - Hawker Hurricane Mk1 1:48

On the eve of the Second World War, the Royal Air Force was organizationally divided into Nome Command and Overseas Command. The Overseas Command, in turn, included the Air Forces of the Middle East, Palestine, Transjordan, Iraq, Aden, the Mediterranean, India, the Far East, as well as wings in Egypt and Sudan. The hot climate zones required a uniform adapted to the climate, which was light khaki in colour. Also, during combat operations in the desert, pilots and ground staff wore a combination of khaki and the traditional RAF grey and blue. Service in hot climates was difficult: heat, sandstorms, and problems with clean water made living conditions much more difficult. However, even in such difficult conditions, the British pilots performed their service selflessly. In heavy fighter battles in the air and dedicated torpedo attacks at sea, the RAF pilots proved their qualifications as resilient, disciplined and experienced fighters.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/icm-48080-british-raf-pilots-in-tropical-uniforms-1941-45-1.jpg?v=1751311090
icm-48081-1-48-british-raf-pilots-and-ground-staff-1939-1945
British RAF Pilots and Ground Staff (1939-1945)

7 figures – 3 pilots, 3 mechanics, 1 WREN member and a dog figure

The kit includes seven figures – three pilots, three mechanics, one WREN member of WWII British Royal Air Force with dog figure and airfield equipment.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/icm-48081-british-raf-pilots-and-ground-staff-1939-1945-1.jpg?v=1751311093
icm-48090-1-48-british-raf-bomber-and-torpedo-pilots-1939-1945
British RAF Bomber and Torpedo Pilots (1939-1945)

In the period between the two world wars, the development of the British Air Force was primarily focused on developing defensive capabilities. However, with the adoption of the rearmament programme in October 1938, the strike component of the air force increased. In addition to bombers, Britain, surrounded by seas, paid special attention to torpedo bombers. With the outbreak of the Second World War, RAF aircraft actively joined the fighting, striking targets on the continent and solving problems in the war at sea. The crews of these aircraft faced certain difficulties, as bombing attacks were carried out mainly from medium altitudes, where air defences were quite effective. As for torpedo attacks, they were generally carried out at low or ultra-low altitudes and required close contact with enemy air defences. During periods of intense fighting, torpedo bomber crews suffered the heaviest losses of any RAF squadron. However, in comparison with other British torpedo carriers, the success rate of torpedo carrier attacks was the highest – 33.5%.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/icm-48090-british-raf-bomber-and-torpedo-pilots-1939-1945-1.jpg?v=1751311124
icm-48313-1-48-bristol-beaufort-mk-ia-with-pilots-and-ground-staff
Bristol Beaufort Mk IA with Pilots and Ground Staff

The Bristol Beaufort torpedo bomber began to arrive at the RAF Coastal Command in late 1939, and the following spring they began to see combat. The aircraft carried out aerial mining of sea harbors, conducted day and night torpedo attacks, and bombed coastal targets. In the course of its operation, the Bristol Beaufort was improved, its armament and equipment changed. The Mk.IA modification received a new machine-gun turret, and ASV radars were installed on the torpedo battleship to search for ships. One of the areas of combat service of this aircraft was the Mediterranean Sea, where the targets were transport convoys and warships of the Axis countries. It should be noted that service on torpedo battleships was extremely difficult and dangerous, and in some periods of the war, losses among their crews were the highest in the entire Royal Air Force. However, despite all the difficulties, torpedo bomber pilots were able to carry out a significant number of successful attacks on enemy ships.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/icm-48313-bristol-beaufort-mk-ia-with-pilots-and-ground-staff-1.jpg?v=1751311434
icm-48801-1-48-supermarine-spitfire-mk-ix-with-pilots-and-ground-staff
Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX with Pilots and Ground Staff

The set included model of Spitfire IX of the British ace Sqn.
