The design of the hull, the distribution of the artillery and the rigging were taken from a draft by Count von Estaing dated 25 September 1772. The construction plans were drawn up by Mr J.B. OLIVIER, famous for his naval architecture. The Royal Louis was a first class tall ship. She was equipped with 120 cannons, 32 pcs. of them of calibre 36, each weighing almost 5 tons. She was one of the largest warships of her time. She was named after the French king Louis XVI. Her length at the waterline was 68 m, the total length 96 m and the height of the main mast from keel to platform was 74 m. In the years 1779-1780 the Royal Louis was a main ship of the Blue and White Squadron, which belonged to the Squadron of America called, Count von Estaing. This ship was exceptional for its forms and above all for the richness, finesse and elegance of its stern, whose balconies were true masterpieces. She was shipwrecked near Brest in 1794 and sank.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/heller-80892-royal-louis-1160786243.jpg?v=1749026414
heller-80865-1-75-santa-maria
Santa María

Christoph Columbus, an Italian navigator living in Portugal, was fascinated by geography and wanted to open a new route to India by sailing westward. She became famous under Tourville who flew his flag on her during the victory of Béveziers on 10th July 1690 and at the battle of Barfleur on 29th May 1692. This first „Soleil Royal“ was built at Brest in 1669 from plans by L. Hubac for an initial tonnage of 2,000 tons, and was designed to take 104 cannon. The sculptures which ornament the ship are attributed to Coysevox. Naval history experts have conducted a great deal of research into the „Soleil Royal“ : they have all come up with their own theories, and they have all disagreed. All authentic documentation has disappeared. The HELLER model aroused great emotion among the experts of the time, even though new elements were added.

Note: The instructions, which are also available separately, are already included with the purchase of the model kit and do not have to be purchased separately.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/heller-80899-soleil-royal-1160786210.jpg?v=1749026526
heller-80841-1-150-la-grande-hermine
La Grande Hermine

In 1534, Jacques CARTIER, a French navigator born in SAINT MALO (1491-1557), was sent by François 1er of France to search for a passage to Asia in the northern part of the New World.
It was aboard GRANDE HERMINE, a vessel specially chartered for this voyage that he reached Newfoundland and CANADA, whose shores had been discovered by CABOT, a Venetian navigator, in 1497, and which he visited three times. It was built in Rochefort in 1756 according to the plans of Clairin-Deslaupiers. Listed among the 74-gun vessels, it has the particularity of having a copper-lined hull. This practice of lining became widespread much later, from 1770 onwards. It allowed the hull, and in particular the hull itself, not to be attacked by worms and other parasites. The GLORIEUX is equipped with 74 guns distributed as follows: 28 guns of 36 pounds on the deck of the 1st battery, 30 guns of 18 pounds on the deck of the 2nd battery and 16 guns of 8 pounds on the forecastle. Like all 74-gun vessels, the GLORIEUX did not have a mantelet on the second battery. Like all ships built at the beginning of the 18th century, the GLORIEUX had a castle topped with a rounded top. In 1779, she was one of the ships that made up the Comte d‘Estaing‘s Wing, also known as the Wing of America. It was part of the Blue Squadron, whose flagship was the Admiral‘s ship „La COURONNE“.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/heller-80889-le-glorieux-1160786203.jpg?v=1749028572
