The howitzer was installed in an armored conning tower, open at the top. The MG 34 machine gun was used as an additional weapon. The concept of using these self-propelled guns provided for their joint actions with self-propelled 75-mm anti-tank installations as part of one unit, and howitzers could fire both direct fire and from closed positions. Both types of self-propelled guns were part of the mobile brigade West (Schnelle Brigade West), which eventually transferred its units to the German 21st Panzer Division.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/icm-35340-10_5cm-lefh-1618-sf-auf-geschutzwagen-fcm-f-1.jpg?v=1751310151
icm-35343-1-35-prost-between-battles-on-bergepanther
‘Prost!’ Between Battles on Bergepanther

WWII German Tankmen with Bergepanther

The harsh living conditions during the fighting and the constant nervous tension and stress experienced by most Wehrmacht soldiers necessitated some kind of mental relief. One of these ways was to drink alcohol. In his memoirs, former Wehrmacht soldier Guy Sayer noted: “At the front, there are as many vodka, schnapps, and liqueurs as there are machine guns. It’s easier to make a hero out of anyone.” Alcohol could also reduce the pain of the wounded. The main alcoholic drink in the Wehrmacht was schnapps, and German soldiers, especially tankers, could also be issued liqueurs. Officers often had French trophy cognacs or wines, which were captured in such large quantities that they were consumed even when surrounded, as was the case, for example, near Stalingrad in the winter of 1943. However, it was very often a bad omen to distribute alcohol to troops, as it often happened before major battles and portended heavy casualties at the front.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/icm-35343-prost-between-battles-on-bergepanther-1.jpg?v=1751310157
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/icm-35351-soviet-tank-crew-1943-45-1.jpg?v=1751310161
Bergepanther with Pz.Kpfw. Its reliable armor and powerful firepower made this tank a formidable opponent on the battlefield. Various combat vehicles were produced based on its chassis, including the armored recovery vehicle (ARV*) Sd.Kfz. 179 Bergepanther. One of the unusual modifications of this vehicle was produced in the 653rd Heavy Panzerjäger Battalion (Schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 653). A turret from another tank, the Pz.Kpfw.IV, was installed on the chassis of the ARV, thus converting the Bergepanther into a command vehicle. According to some researchers, this turret was fixed, and instead of a gun, its dummy was installed, allowing the space inside the armored hull, free from the gun, to be used for additional radio stations and work with combat maps. It is likely that such a modification was made only on one specimen. This vehicle was part of the combat strength of the Schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 653, and its use occurred in the spring of 1944 in the area of Ternopil, Ukraine.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/icm-35360-bergepanther-with-pz_kpfw_-iv-turret-1.jpg?v=1751310167
icm-35361-1-35-pz-kpfw-v-panther-ausf-d
Pz.Kpfw.
