With the introduction of the Bf 109 G-series the constant operational demands for increased fire power and additional equipment brought with them a serious deterioration in the fighter's flying characteristics. The most important change denoted by the introduction of the Bf 109 G was the installation of the more powerful Daimler Benz DB 605 A engine in which the cylinder block had been re-designed to obtain the maximum possible bore with the existing cylinder centers.Bf109 G-2 was produced in parallel with the Bf109 G-1, and differed in lacking the pressure cabin and GM-1 nitrous oxide boost. It was used primarily in the fighter reconnaissance role, and the service test group at Guyana court, France, experimented with a ventral gun pack in which two rear-firing MG 17 machine guns were fitted (Schraege Musik).The Bf-109G-2 was built in substantially larger numbers than the Bf-109G-1, and was produced in a wide range of modifications. Bf 109 G-2 fitted with an older type ETC 500 IX b bomb rack for 250 or 500 kg bomb. The tail wheel is not retractable due to a larger tyre (350 x 135) and there is no locking device, either. The head armour plate has been moved backwards to the rear line of canopy’s swinging part. The tailplane and fin have no cast leading edges any more. The cooling air intakes for sparking plugs and deeper cooler under the nose are also new. Oil cooler is a bit deeper than in F-1/2 and early F-4.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/trumpeter-02406-messerschmitt-bf-109-g-2.jpg?v=1749140588
trumpeter-02407-1-24-messerschmitt-bf-109-g-6-u3
Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6/U3

The stepped-up Allied bomber offensive against Germany and occupied Europe, forced the Luftwaffe to use the elderly Bf 109G series in a variety roles to try to counter the overwhelming numbers of Allied planes. More air war meant more losses as well as a basic need for more aircraft and pilots. More loses meant more pilots needed. In an attempt to increase the speed of the Bf 109G, the DB 605D engine was developed. Similar to the DB 605AS, the DB 605D's supercharger was increased in size, and again, the compression ratio was increased as well as the displacement. The MW 50 boost was retained, and as a result, the G-10 was the fastest of the entire G series. Standard equipment for the G-10 was the FuG 25a IFF, a DF loop, the tall wooden tail, the erla haube canopy, and the FuG 16ZY with the Moranne mast under the left wing. The DB 605D employed the refined cowling, enlarged supercharger intake, deeper oil cooler, and wider propeller blades all of which appeared on the G-14AS. One further difference in the appearance of the G-10 was the addition of two bulges on either side of the lower cowling resulting from enlarged oil sumps and camshaft covers. Some production models of the G-10 received wings with the normal size wheel well bulges and tires of the G-6/14 type. These aircraft also had the long shaft, fixed tail wheel and no external trim tabs on the rudder. The Fw-190D was a re-engined and reengineered development of the widely-used Fw-190A. Prototype testing began in March 1942.The first production variant was designated D-9. Construction started in Summer 1944. The multirole D-9 carried bombs in some versions and radar in others and was even faster than the D-1. Nicknamed ‘Dora-9‘, service began in October 1944 with III/JG-54 (the 3d Squadron of Fighter Group 54), then I and II/JG-26 (by January 1945), and JG-2 and JG-301 (in early 1945). Allied and Luftwaffe pilots immediately dubbed it the ‘long-nose‘ Fw-190. On their first operational mission with the new Fw-190D-9, II/JG-26 shot down four British ‘Lancaster‘ bombers and one ‘Mosquito‘ fighter for the loss of one ‘Dora-9‘. Several Fw-190D-9 equipped groups, including JG-2 and JG-26, participated in airfield attacks by nearly 1,000 aircraft during the ill-advised ‘Operation Base Plate‘ opening the Battle of the Bulge on January 1, 1945. By the time JG-6 received 150 D-9s in April 1945, the bombing campaign had so restricted fuel supplies that only four aircraft could fly at a time.
