It combined the hull of an M5 light tank with an open-top turret which was armed with a short-barreled 75mm howitzer and a 12.7mm machine gun. The howitzer was capable of firing high-explosive, anti-tank, and smoke rounds up to a range of 8,800m. The vehicle was officially accepted in May 1942 and 1,800 examples were built from September of that year until January 1944. They were deployed starting from mid-1943 and they used their armament and mobility to good effect in the fire-support role in the Italian, Western European, and Pacific Theaters. It was a boon for the 8-man U.S. crews that deployed it, not least because of the serious mobility upgrade it offered over its towed artillery piece predecessors, and an impressive range of 23.5 kilometers using explosive rounds; stability when firing was provided by a large rear spade. A 460hp air cooled engine enabled a top speed of 38km/h. Production began in February 1945, and while it was officially adopted in May 1945 none of the 418 manufactured by the end of WWII saw action. Following the innovative use of mobile artillery by the German army at the outset of the conflict, the need for artillery pieces to be as mobile as tank battalions was universally recognised. The Allies initially mounted their first self-propelled artillery units on half-track vehicles, but the most effective solution manifested itself with the introduction of the M7 Priest. Using the hull of the M3 Lee medium tank the M7 was armed with a 105mm M2A1 howitzer. It was deployed operationally for the first time in 1942 by British troops who gave it the nickname ’Priest’, due to the position of the machine gun in the front of the vehicle which resembled a Church pulpit. Robust and reliable, it had a plentiful supply of ammunition and provided effective indirect support fire. It was used by both the American army and the U.S. Marines on all fronts throughout the course of the war.

NEW GLUABLE RUBBER TRACKS - DECAL FOR 4 VERSIONS - COLOR INSTRUCTIONS SHEET

The self-propelled guns of the M-110 series have represented, for many years, the backbone of the field artillery of the United States Army. The vehicle was designed around commonality of automotive parts with the existing M46 and M47 Patton series of medium combat tanks stocking US Cold War inventories at the time. The M55 was similar in scope and function to the preceding M53 self-propelled assault gun armed with a 155mm main gun barrel.
