They included the BB-61 Iowa, the BB-62 New Jersey, and the third ship, the famous BB-63 Battleship Missouri. These ships, which boasted an amazing 212,000hp allowing a 33 knot top speed, were armed with massive 40.6cm main guns. The Iowa Class ships stretched 270.4m but were relatively thin, with only 33m max width, enabling them to pass through the Panama Canal. Being commissioned in June 1944, the USS Missouri took part in many operations during the Pacific War including bombardments on Japanese mainland and capital. On September 2, 1945, the treaty for the unconditional surrender of Japanese forces was signed onboard the deck of the historic USS Missouri. With the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950 the USS Missouri was deployed again with the other Iowa Class Battleships for fire support. The USS Missouri was relegated to reserve duty in 1955, but became subject to complete renovation and modernization in 1986 when she was fitted with the latest in electronic weapon systems, cruise missiles and other improvements. In 1991, the USS Missouri was deployed to fight in the Gulf War. Launched in 1942, the New Jersey was one of 4 Iowa class battleships built by the U.S. Navy. Like other Iowa class ships she boasted a 45,000 ton displacement, an amazing 212,000hp, was packed with three turrets of 50 caliber 40.6cm triple guns, and despite her large size, with hull stretching over 270m, was designed narrow enough to pass through the Panama Canal. Following serving in major battles in the Pacific during WWII, she was then deployed to both the Korean and Vietnam wars. In 1982, she was upgraded with modern technology and weapon's systems enabling her to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. Its design represented that the class was 45,000 tons (the very limit to the London Treaty), nine 16in\/50cal guns in three batteries, and speed 33 knots. The speed was decided under precautions against the Japanese Knots class battleships, which boasted of speed 30 knots. Because the US faced two oceans and its ships had to pass through the Panama Canal. Inevitably, the waterline of the Iowa class was as long as 262m. Although the US navy at that time had the know-how of 18in guns, they could not be mounted on a ship under 33m-wide. And the fact that the Yamato class had 18in guns was not known to the US until the end of the WW. Against it the Japanese Navy ordered Yamato and 9 warships to Okinawa. On the way Yamato was sunk by aerial attacks by US aircraft carriers. After all the fight of the super battleships between the US and Japan was forever unrealized. By the way the comparison between Iowa and Yamato is often treated in some technical books. Certainly Yamato (18in guns, 41cm armor) exceeds Iowa (16in guns, 31cm armor) in gunnery and armor. However, Iowa is faster by 6 knots and discharges more shells in one minute than Yamato. And Yamato’s 15m rangefinders gave tremendous precision, but was no match for Iowa’s radars. All these conditions considered, it is difficult to decide which is better. In a night battle, Yamato could have been one-sidedly hit by Iowa. Moreover, the supremacy of naval force had been switched from battleships to aircrafts when the two were constructed. From that point of view, Iowa was more powerful I that she served as the escort of aircraft carriers.
