Developed in an era when HEAT warheads were thought to make conventional heavy armour of limited value, the Leopard focused on firepower in the form of the German-built version of the British L7 105-mm gun, and improved cross-country performance that was unmatched by other designs of the era.

The design started as a collaborative project during the 1950s between West Germanyand France, and later joined by Italy,[1] but the partnership ended shortly after and the final design was ordered by the Bundeswehr, with full-scale production starting in 1965. In total, 6,485 Leopard tanks have been built, of which 4,744 were battle tanks and 1,741 were utility and anti-aircraft variants, not including 80 prototypes and pre-series vehicles.

To enable the Canadian Leopard C2 MBTs to operate the dozer blade as well as the mine plough and mine roller systems, an Engineer Equipment Interface Modification Kit (EEJM) has been developed by Krauss-Maffei. This allows the tank to operate the dozer blade or one of two mine clearing systems, permitting operation with the driver's hatch closed down. The exterior cable routed from the armour scoop to the add-on equipment is protected by armoured covers.

The Track Width Mine Plough unit (TWMP) was designed and built by RAMTA, a division of Israel Aircraft Industries, and allows the clearance of anti- personnel and anti-tank mines from the path of the tank tracks. The plough action moves the mines aside without detonating them, and can be adjusted to give a clearance depth of 200, 250 or 300 mm. The TWMP clears a lane about one metre wide in front of each track, and there is an unploughed lane 1500 mm wide between the tracks. In this uncleared area, the TWMP drags a “dog bone” which is used to detonate tilt rod mines. The total weight of the installed equipment is around 3 tons.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/hobbyboss-84557-leopard-c2-mexas-with-twmp.jpg?v=1749105518
