The primary requirement however was to develop a ‘state of the art’ modern aircraft able to perform low-altitude penetrating strike missions. This need was met by the development of a twin-engine combat aircraft with a variable-sweep wing. The Tornado IDS (Interdictor / strike) was the first version to be released by the British Royal Air Force and designated GR.1. In 1996 the Tornado was upgraded to the Gr.4 standard which was characterized by improved operational capabilities, new avionics systems for navigation and the adoption of new ‘on-board’ technologies. These systems enabled the effective identification and tracking of targets and the weapons management of the newer generation of weapons such as GBU-12 Paveway IV bombs.

NEW PARTS - 350 parts - Photo-etched details - Removable RB199 engine with support trolley - Retracted or extended flaps and slats - Movable ailerons - Openable radome and fully detailed radars - Open or closed thrust reversers - Open or closed air brakes - Rubber tyres - Movable variable geometry wings and pylons - Rubber cover for wings entry point - Color instruction sheet - 2 Super decals sheet for 3 versions

FIGURE NOT INCLUDED - CONTAINS ONE MODEL

The Tornado arose from a collaborative project between Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom to produce a multi-role high-performance combat aircraft. The result was a twin-engine, two-seat aircraft with variable-geometry wings, specifically designed to fulfill its primary role: a low-altitude supersonic strike fighter capable of “following” the terrain profile. The Tornado IDS (Interdictor/Strike), optimized for attack missions, was the first variant to enter service with the operational flying units of the three countries involved in the project. Specifically, the aircraft delivered to the British Royal Air Force were designated as the GR.1 and were actively employed—carrying out a high number of missions—during the 1991 Gulf War.
