The first prototype of the aircraft took off on December 18, 1936, and flight tests of prototypes took place over the next year. Serial production began in the spring of 1938. The bomber was produced by two factories, Nakajima and Mitsubishi, and the aircraft of these two different manufacturers had slight differences in the design of the nose of the fuselage. A modification of the aircraft designated Ki-21-Ib (the second production version of the Ki-21 bomber line) was produced with the experience of air combat in the skies of China and had enhanced small arms. The main visual difference between the bombers of this modification was the tail machine gun emplacement. The aircraft took an active part in combat operations during the Sino-Japanese War and the early stages of World War II. Subsequently, they were transferred to training units, and some of them were converted into transport aircraft.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/icm-48195-mitsubishi-ki-21-ib-sally-1.jpg?v=1751311206
icm-48196-1-48-mitsubishi-ki-21-ia-sally
Mitsubishi Ki-21-Ia Sally

The Ki-21 pre-production bomber made its first flight in late 1936. Serial production of its first modification, the Ki-21-Ia, began in 1938, the same year the aircraft made its combat debut. Air units of the Imperial Japanese Army, which were equipped with the Ki-21-Ia, were involved in active combat operations in China. In the spring of 1939, the Ki-21-Ia took part in combat operations against the Red Army on the Halhin Gol River. The aircraft’s combat payload of 1,000 kg was a good indicator of its time and allowed for massive bombing strikes, and the defensive tactics developed by the pilots of these bombers in air battles resulted in their fairly low losses compared to other types of aircraft. After more advanced models were produced, the first modification bombers were transferred to training units, although a certain number of Ki-21-Ia continued to be operated by combat units. The RA-5C incorporated all the new features of the A-5B, such as the humpback fuselage, the big flaps, and the leading-edge BLC system. The new BLC scheme proved a little tricky, as it required more engine power. As the RA-5C was substantially heavier than the A-5A, this meant that once the BLC system was engaged the aircraft lost power and tended to drop abruptly. The major difference from the A-5B was the RA-5C's equipment。The TV camera under the nose became part of the reconnaissance suite, but most of the gear was carried in a long slender ‘canoe‘ on the bottom of the aircraft's fuselage and running from the nose gear back towards the tail. The RA-5C entered fleet service in 1964. 43 RA-5Cs were built, following the 12 A-5Bs that had been completed as RA-5Cs. After this batch of 43 was completed, the 43 surviving A-5As and A-5Bs were rebuilt to RA-5C standard, and the production line was shut down. The RA-5C proved so useful in Vietnam that the Navy ordered 46 more RA-5Cs in 1968. Only 36 were actually completed, however, with the last rolling off the production line in August 1970. This final batch featured J-79-GE-10 engines with 79.46 kN (8,100 kgp / 17,860 lbf) afterburning thrust, as well as a leading-edge wing extension trailing back from the air intakes, plus slightly modified air intakes. By this time, the RA-5C had plenty of power and it was no longer such a handful on carrier deck landings

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/trumpeter-02809-north-american-ra-5c-vigilante.jpg?v=1749135472
trumpeter-02835-1-48-sukhoi-su-24m-fencer-d
Sukhoi Su-24M Fencer D

The Su-24 front-line Bomber designed by Sukhoi Design Bureau.
