Sydney Camm's design team set itself to improve the plane’s performance and armament effectiveness. On June 11, 1940, the prototype of the Mk II version was flown, equipped with a Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine with a two-stage compressor. With this engine, the Hurricane reached 342 mph (550 km/h). The first production Hurricane Mk IIA went into action in September 1940.

The second stage of modernisation was to improve firepower by increasing the number of machine guns to twelve, resulting in the appearance of the Mk IIB version. At the same time, work was carried out on adapting the wing to the installation of 20mm Hispano-Suiza HS.404 cannons. Cannon-armed version, marked Mk IIC, appeared in units (242, 3 and 257 Squadrons RAF) in March 1941 and was produced without major changes until July 1944. A total of 4,711 Mk IIC machines were produced, serving on almost all fronts during the Second World War.

The aircraft, designed as an interceptor, was adapted over time to the role of an intruder, a night fighter (a version equipped with radar was also created), a carrier-based fighter, an attack aircraft and a light bomber. He lasted the longest in the first-line units in the latter role. The Mk IIC version also became the starting point for the Mk IID anti-tank version, equipped with two 40mm Vickers S cannons and the Mk IV - a specialised assault version that could carry bombs or rockets.

A tropicalised version was used outside the European theatre of operations, equipped with a distinctive dust filter. The pilots of the Polish Air Force met the Hurricane Mk IIC as early as in the autumn of 1941 during exchange postings in the No. 87 Squadron. In 1943, single examples were sent to the No. 318 Fighter-Reconnaissance Squadron, and in April 1944, the entire Polish No. 309 Squadron was equipped with this type and operated from airfields in Scotland on patrol duty.

Product safety information
Manufacturer information

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/arma-hobby-40004-hawker-hurricane-mk-iic-1160787074.jpg?v=1749036368
arma-hobby-40005-1-48-hawker-hurricane-mk-iic-trop
Hawker Hurricane Mk IIc (trop)

Hurricane Mk II c trop in 1/48 scale.

Hurricane Mk IIc quarter scale kit. Together with the cannon-armed Hurricane Mk IIc, these aircraft were used to attack ground targets with gunfire and bombing. Thanks to installing a dust filter, the ‘trop‘ version was also created, intended for operations in difficult climates. Mk IIb and c aircraft equipped in this way took an effective part in combat in Africa, the Far East and the Soviet Arctic. In 1941, ‘real’ Hurricane PR.IIs were being developed at the Heliopolis base in Egypt - unarmed, equipped with a set of cameras, and in place of guns in the wings they had additional fuel tanks installed to increase range. The second variant were tactical reconnaissance aircraft, called ‘Tac-R’ - which differed from fighters only in having a photo camera and an additional radio to enable communication with ground troops. They were armed, but often some of the guns were removed to reduce the weight of the aircraft, loaded after all with additional photographic equipment.

Hawker Hurricane Mk.II is a development of the famous fighter designed by Sydney Camm, created by installing a more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine equipped with a two-stage supercharger in a standard airframe. This solution significantly improved performance. The new version designated Hurricane Mk.IIa, with unchanged armament, was first flown on June 11, 1940, and was soon followed by a variant with twelve 7.69 mm machine guns in the wings, designed Hurricane Mk IIb. Unfortunately, the small calibre of the weapon did not significantly change the effectiveness of fire, especially against armoured targets. Therefore, these machines were later widely used mainly for bombing under the name ‘Hurribomber‘, and for reconnaissance. The attack dive of the Stuka was so severe, that quite a number of automatic features had to be incorporated into the manoeuvre.

At an altitude of approximately 15,000 ft., the pilot would locate his target through a bombsight window, which was located in the floor of the cockpit. His engine and propeller had automatic controls, to optimise the aircraft when in a dive, and an automatic trimmer would make the aircraft tail heavy, as the pilot initiated the dive. He would move the dive lever to the rear, which would limit the kick of the control column and quickly begin a defined sequence of actions, which if done correctly, would see his ordnance detonate on his intended target. He quickly set the trim tabs, reduced the throttle and closed the engine coolant flaps. The aircraft would automatically become tail heavy and pitch over in a 180-degree roll, placing the aircraft in a steep nose-down dive at the same time, dive breaks were automatically deployed, to reduce the speed of the dive, to a constant 360 mph. This was the point of no return as the attack sequence had begun.

As the strain on the body of the pilot increased, he still had much work to do. The angle of his dive could be checked by looking at a series of red lines on the side of his cockpit window and lining them up against the horizon 60, 75, or 80 degree angle of attack. He would then look forward through the fixed gun sight, to line up his attack, before releasing his heavy main bomb - the optimum release height was indicated to the pilot, by a light flicking on in his altimeter. The bomb was carried on a large U-shaped cradle, which would swing down on release, throwing the bomb safely clear of the large propeller and on to the target. As all this action was taking place, the pilot would have certainly had at least a couple of reassuring glances at the red pins protruding up from the top of the wings, which informed him that the automatic dive recovery system was engaged, should he fall victim to a g-induced black-out. Once recovered and the nose of the aircraft was above the horizon, the dive breaks were automatically retracted, the throttle was opened and the propeller was set to climb the pilot then quickly had to manually open the coolant flaps, to prevent the engine from overheating and then resume flying the aircraft.

This was the point that the Stuka was at its most vulnerable, flying at low level, at relatively slow speed and in hostile territory. Arguably the most unconventional Fairey designed aircraft to enter full production, the Gannet was developed in response to a 1945 Royal Navy requirement for an advanced carrier-based, turboprop-powered anti-submarine hunter-killer, one which was rugged enough to withstand the rigors of operation at sea.

Intended to counter the recent expansion of the Soviet submarine fleet at the start of the Cold War era, the Gannet was equipped with all manner of the latest electronic detection equipment and if an enemy submarine was detected, it could be marked, tracked, and if necessary, attacked, using bombs, depth charges, rockets, and air-launched acoustic torpedoes.

One feature of the Gannet which helped to give it a unique appearance was the adoption of its powerplant, the innovative Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba. This arrangement saw two gas turbine engines mounted side by side in the nose of the gannet, sharing a common gearbox, but both operating independently, each engine driving its own coaxially mounted, contra-rotating propeller. In addition to this, the engines could run on kerosene and even diesel fuel, which was safer to handle and less refined than traditional aviation fuels.

This arrangement provided Gannet crews with more than enough power for carrier operations, with the reassurance of two engines when embarking on long ocean patrols. Once in flight, the pilot could shut down one of the engines to conserve fuel and whilst this would reduce the Gannet's maximum speed, it would extend its loiter capabilities. Usually, a pilot would alternate engine use during a long patrol, running each engine for around an hour before swapping to the other engine - the engine mounted on the port side drove the front propeller.

Another unique feature of the Gannet's design was its bi-folding wing system, something which was designed to allow this large aircraft to operate safely and to be stored aboard one of the Royal Navy's relatively small aircraft carriers. The Mirage 5, especially designed for export, is an extremely simplified version of the Mirage III E.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/heller-30422-dassault-mirage-iiie-rd-1160786380.jpg?v=1749031808
heller-30510-1-48-fouga-cm-170-magister
Fouga CM.170 Magister

France was the first country to produce a jet aircraft making inexpensive pilot-training possible, the FOUGA CM 170. Returning the pure delta-wing layout adopted for the earlier and highly successful Mirage III/V series of fighters makes the Mirage 2000 almost unique amongst current generations of advanced technology fighter aircraft. The delta-wing layout offers some advantages, but also has disadvantages and Dassault-Breguet carried out much development work to improve the efficiency of such planforms in the Mirage 2000, this is greatly assisted by the use of computerized controls and fly-by-wire technology which give full control over any inherently unstable flight characteristics throughout the performance range. First flown on 10 March 1978, the single-seat Mirage 2000C entered squadron service with the French Air Force in July 1984 to start the process of replacing the elderly Mirage IIIEs of the fighter squadron 1/2 „Cigognes“ at 102 Dijon-Longvic air base.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/heller-80426-dassault-mirage-2000c-1160786376.jpg?v=1749031698
heller-80427-1-48-sepecat-jaguar-gr1-gr3
SEPECAT Jaguar GR1/GR3

The Jaguar was the first of many successful Anglo-French aviation projects since the 60s.
