Among the ships sunk on that tragic day was USS Arizona (BB-39), a powerful Pennsylvania-class battleship displacing 30,000 tons. The battleship had been transferred to Hawaii in April 1940 as a deterrent to Japanese territorial expansion. Ironically, Japanese aircraft sank her at anchor with the loss of 1,177 lives. The wreck of USS Arizona still lies at the bottom of Pearl Harbor, straddled by a memorial to all those who died in the surprise attack. One of the aircraft types that the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) used to carry out the raid was the Nakajima B5N2 torpedo bomber. Known to the Allies as “Kate”, this Type 97 aircraft achieved some notable successes in the early part of the Pacific War.

As the 70th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack approaches, Dragon is launching a very practical set consisting of a 1/700 scale USS Arizona model as well as two “Kate” torpedo bombers protagonists. These two elements – battleship and aircraft - can once again meet in a head-on confrontation.

The ship kit is the previously released Premium Edition item, which means it’s well endowed with photo-etched parts and metal barrels for the large naval guns. Clever engineering removes much of the hard work from assembly too. On the other hand, the two B5N2 aircraft are completely new items from new toolings. They are molded in transparent plastic so that modelers can paint them more easily and retain clear glazing for the cockpit canopies. For those modelers wishing to reproduce a scene from that historically dramatic day, you can’t get much better than this set!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/dragon-hk-7127-uss-arizona-bb-39-and-nakajima-b5n2-kate.jpg?v=1749145179
icm-ds3528-1-35-united-states-military-vehicles-ww2
United States Military Vehicles (WW2)

During World War II, the United States swiftly organized mass production of military vehicles across various classes and purposes. American vehicles gained widespread adoption in both US and allied forces due to their simple, refined, and practical design. A notable example was the three-axle Studebaker US6, launched by the Studebaker Corporation in 1941. This robust vehicle offered high payload capacity, with about 200,000 units manufactured across thirteen variants—including the US6-U3 truck and US6-U5 fuel tanker. Chevrolet (then a part of General Motors Company) also produced military two-axle trucks. Their Model 7117 was an all-wheel drive vehicle with a 1.5-ton payload capacity, featuring a metal cabin and a transmission-powered mechanical winch. The US Army primarily deployed these vehicles for auxiliary tasks within the continental United States.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/1809/4091/files/icm-ds3528-united-states-military-vehicles-ww2-1.jpg?v=1751697156
icm-ds3532-1-35-festive-dinner-on-the-front-line
Festive Dinner on the Front Line

Hot and hearty meals on the front lines played a much more significant role for soldiers than for ordinary civilians in peacetime. Regular meals during wartime not only addressed the issue of maintaining combat readiness but also had considerable moral importance.

During World War II, the U.S. Army used M-1937 field ovens, which ran on liquid fuel, for cooking. These ovens allowed soldiers to fry, roast, stew, or even bake pies. Similar ovens could also be installed in the beds of army trucks converted into field kitchens; these vehicles were called “Kitchen Trucks.” These trucks had extended frame arches for canvas covers so that cooks could stand upright while working.

Wooden bench-seats for personnel, which were normally installed inside standard army trucks, could be placed on the outside in Kitchen Trucks to hold pots, baking trays, and other kitchen equipment. Cooks working in field kitchens and Kitchen Trucks aimed to provide soldiers with hot meals at least twice a day. Most of the food prepared was simple but high in calories. However, whenever possible, American soldiers were treated to something more enjoyable—for example, roasted turkey.
