Structured around one or more aircraft carriers, this unit is protected by anti-aircraft and anti-submarine warfare escort, followed by a squadron train responsible for refuelling at sea. As early as the 1960s, the French Navy set up such groups, the new aircraft carriers Clemenceau and Foch were frequently accompanied by Tartar recast escorts, named after the anti-aircraft system equipping the Kersaint and Dupetit-Thouars among others. Away from its home port and sometimes in hostile zones, it is then necessary to supply the group with fuel, ammunition, spare parts and fresh food. This is the role of the tanker refuellers, the first modern vessels equipped for this purpose being the Seine and the Saône. A delicate exercise, refuelling at sea, or RAM, sees several ships sailing together, the tanker often being flanked by the aircraft carrier on one side and a wing escort on the other. The fuel is transferred by means of flexible sleeves, with the goods passing through pallets suspended by a network of cables. The Yukikaze was the 8th completed destroyer built of the Kagero-class in January 1940. The Yukikaze saw fierce action at Midway, Guadalcanal, Mariana Islands, Leyte Gulf, as well as serving in other battles throughout the Pacific Theater. Furthermore, she also served as a patrol ship and assisted in transportation duties. At the time of her completion, she initially came armed with three dual 12.7cm gun turrets and two quadruple 61cm torpedo launchers, but in the latter stages of the War, her armament was strengthened with a complement of AA guns as well as radar changing her beautiful silhouette into one of ferociousness. Even at the Ten-Ichi-Go operation in April 1945 where she fought hard alongside with the doomed Yamato, she was able to save many survivors and return safely to port. The Yukikaze survived WWII relatively undamaged she was therefore named ‘the Lucky Destroyer‘. After the war, she was used to ferry Japanese soldiers and personnel back to Japan. The Kagero class packed a heavy punch with three twin 12.7cm gun placements and two 61cm quadruple torpedo tubes, and combined that with a top speed of 35 knots, plus a range of 5,000nmi at 18 knots. The Kagero took part in some of the most renowned actions on the seas in WWII, including the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the Battle of Midway in 1942, and major assasults on Rabaul and Colombo. Although largely starved of opportunities to show what it could do, in the November 1942 Battle of Tassafaronga the Kagero used its Type 93 ‘long lance‘ torpedoes to great effect, together with eight other vessels scoring hits on the US ships Minneapolis, New Orleans, Pensacola and Northampton, crippling and eventually sinking the latter. Radar was installed and the depth charge throwers were re-located. The refit was completed by July. Then she moved back in Mediterranean, where she performed strike attacks against Italian convoys, and later took part in the attack against the Italian base in Tobruk (Libya). Here HMS Zulu's luck turned. On September 14, 1942, she suffered some damages from the Italian coastal batteries on Tobruk coast.
