Bell Helicopter won the competition with its Model 204, designated XH-40. The prototype made its first flight on October 20, 1956, followed by the production HU-1A, officially named Iroquois. The growing need for dedicated fire-support helicopters, or “gunships,” led to the development of the UH-1C. In June 1965, UH-1C helicopters began entering service with U.S. Army aviation units. Developed specifically for the gunship role, they featured a more powerful engine and wider main rotor blades for improved performance and maneuverability.

One of the principal armament configurations was the XM21 system, combining two six-barrel 7.62 mm M134 Miniguns with pods for 70 mm unguided rockets. With their firepower and maneuverability, UH-1C gunships provided effective support for ground forces, secured landing zones, and conducted night operations.
