Exceptionally beautiful from an aerodynamic point of view, it was equipped with the powerful German DB 601 inline engines, produced under license by the Italian aircraft industry. The new engines and the solidity of the aircraft’s design provided the Regia Aeronautica with a fighter capable of competing “on equal terms” with Allied fighters. Its flight performance was in fact significantly better than that of the previous generation of fighters equipped with radial engines, such as the Fiat G.50 and the Macchi MC.200. The first series of the MC.202, which entered production in 1941, still featured a configuration close to that of the first experimental aircraft.
