Designed as a ‘turret fighter’ to concentrate firepower on unescorted enemy bombers, the Boulton-Paul Defiant had almost all its armament in a dorsal turret; unfortunately this proved disastrous when it met enemy fighters. After enjoying some success as a night fighter during the Battle of Britain and until 1942, the Defiant was removed from service - but it still remains an iconic aircraft of World War II.
