In the early 1930s, the Soviet Navy tasked their “Central Aero Hydrodynamic Institute”, a known aircraft design Institute, to develop a Motor Torpedo Boat that can go over 50 Knots. As the result, the G-5 has unusual design of a hydroplaning design bottom much like the float on a sea plane, with a whaleback upper hull. G-5 had a displacement of 14.5 tons, measures 19.1 meters lone, 3.3 meters wide and top speed at 53 knots making her the fastest torpedo boat in World War II. G-5 had a six men crew and was armed with two rear released 533mm torpedoes and a pair of 12.7mm machine guns. A total of 329 boats were built at various locations and saw action in the Spanish Civil War as well as the Great Patriot War against the Axis. Continues improvements were made including addition of radio communication equipments and up armaments including multiple tubes rockets launcher making her one of the formidable assets of the Soviet Navy.
