Background

As a milestone of German engineering, the Leopard 1 wrote military history from 1965 onwards. Its development marked Germany's re-entry into international tank production. The perfect balance of mobility, firepower and protection made it an export hit - more than 4,700 units were produced and exported to 13 countries. The various user states developed their own variants, which differed in specific adaptations and equipment. Until 2003, it formed the backbone of the German tank troops, before it was replaced by the Leopard 2.
