Owing to the Norsemen expansion the period from the 8th to 11th centuries is referred to by historians as the Viking Age. The Vikings formed troops and made long sea voyages. Victims of their raids were England and Ireland, France and North Germany, The Iberian Peninsula and South Italy. They even penetrated into Byzantium and Eastern Europe. Even amid the native fiords of Scandinavia Vikings' violence led to continual internecine clashes between troops of different jarls.
