As M113's aluminum armor couldn’t stop higher-caliber bullets, and crews were dangerously exposed if using the roof-mounted 0.50-cal machine gun in Vietnam War. One solution was to fit Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle (ACAV) kits, which included heavy gun shields to protect machine gunners. Furthermore, sometimes a bigger kick was needed for what was a relatively light vehicle, and so an M40 106mm recoilless rifle could be fitted on the right side of the roof too. The weapon did considerably boost the M113’s firepower if enemy fortifications had to be destroyed, for example.

Dragon has a new 1/35 scale kit of just such a weapon combination as used in the Vietnam War. The superb model is based on Dragon’s existing M113 kit, and it has all the elements necessary to create an APC fitted with the ACAV kit. This 1/35 kit features numerous parts made by 3D printing to ensure accuracy and true-to-scale thickness. This is a fine kit of the ubiquitous M113 that fought in the Vietnam War, and the ACAV and M40 recoilless rifle additions give it an extra boost.
