Gebirgsjäger or Alpine riflemen appeared in Europe as separate military formations in the beginning of the First World War. Germany actively developed mountain rifle troops and in 1938 formed the 1st Mountain Infantry Division ‘Edelweiss‘. During the Second World War, German Gebirgsjäger took part in several operations, acting in various sectors of the front. Gebirgsjäger units were involved in battles in Norway in 1940, in the Balkans and Crete in 1941, and in the Italian campaign of 1943-1945. The Battle of the Caucasus, despite the initial successes and serious training of the Gebirgsjäger, ended in defeat for the Wehrmacht.
