The ASMP programme was begun in 1978 with the aim of producing a medium-range air-to-ground missile to be carried by the future Mirage 2000N. In the interim before the new Dassault bomber was brought into service, 18 Mirage IVAs were transformed into the IVP model, a version with equal penetration capacities, capable of carrying the CT52 reconnaissance container with cameras and thermographic infra-red system . The first operational squadron scrambled from Mont-de-Marsan on 1st May 1986 fitted with the new supersonic missile fitted with a nuclear warhead, which could be replaced by a conventional explosive designed for administering an inhibiting shot across the bows.
