Soviet Air Forces

On 23 April 1976 at Novosibirsk, pilots Vladimir Vylomov and V.Belanin tool off for the first time with the prototype U-58TM combat trainer. The aircraft then was ferried to Zhukovskiy for further testing, and by 25 November 1976 the state acceptance tests had been completed at Akhtubinsk. The U-58TM-with military designation Su-15UM and factory designation izdeliye 43-was a two-seat combat trainer developed from the late production Su-15TM. Unlike the former Su-15UT trainer, in which the fuselage was extended to fit a second cockpit, the length of the Su-15UM fuselage remained unchanged. Inner fuel tank capacity was also the same, and only some equipment was sacrificed to accommodate the second cockpit. The Su-15UM had no radar, but it could carry R-98MT and R-60 IR-guided missiles as well as gun containers. It also lacked the SAU-58 control system, Lazur-M datalink, Sirena RWR and RSBN-5S short-range navigation system. A small number of Su-15UM trainers were made from 1976 to 1979, and it was the last Su-15 production series.
