The history of motorsport in Japan
began with the first Japanese Grand Prix (GP) held in 1963.
At that time, domestic manufacturers were actively involved in the demanding world of motorsport, and
in 1965, Toyota formed TMSC (Toyota Motorsport Club).
The following year, they made their debut at the 3rd Japanese GP with the 2000GT, Toyota's first model equipped with a DOHC engine.

The Celica 1600GT, which debuted in October 1970,
was developed with racing specifications in mind from the outset. It featured
a front spoiler, rear spoiler, headlamp covers, and overfenders, the shapes of which were determined using computer and wind tunnel testing .

The 2T-G engine was developed with the goal of creating a strong touring car
that could compete with rivals. This included increasing power through features such as a dry-sump lubrication system, and completely redesigning the suspension arms .

The Celica 1600GT made its racing debut in November 1971
at the Japan All-Star Race held at Fuji Speedway.
It made a spectacular debut, dominating the TS-b class with three entries, securing first, second, and third place.
The Celica's winning streak continued into 1972,
with a victory in the Touring Car class at the All Japan Suzuka Motor Race in March. In April of the same year, it demonstrated its potential to dominate the races, winning the overall title
at the Race de Nippon held at Fuji Speedway, beating out the Skyline GT-R and Fairlady 240Z .

At the Japanese Grand Prix held at Fuji on May 3rd, the Celica took first, second, and fourth place, almost completely dominating the top positions,
while the Corolla Levin came in third, demonstrating Toyota's overwhelming strength.
