The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was one of the most successful American attack aircraft of the Cold War period. A small and lightweight design designed by Ed Heinemann could carry a significant load of weapons, and thanks to its simple operation, it was perfectly suited for service on board aircraft carriers.
Versions A-4E and A-4F were among the most important varieties of Skyhawk used during the Vietnam War. U.S. Navy aircraft performed numerous strike missions from aircraft carriers operating off the coast of Vietnam, and the U.S. Marine Corps Skyhawks also operated from land bases. Characteristic for this period were very colorful markings of individual squadrons, contrasting with gray-white painting of aircraft.
