The hull of the M113 tracked troop transport vehicle thanks to its low cost and reliability has proved to be a valid platform for numerous anti-tank weapon systems, with Tow and anti-aircraft missiles as in the case of this version. The M163 was developed around the 20 mm Vulcan cannon. A rotating rods (which allow a very high shooting cadence: 6000 shots per minute) born for aeronautical use; the whole system is based on the weapon placed in a simple open turret and the feeding mechanism for ammunition inside the vehicle. In addition to the anti-aircraft defense, the M163 is also used for support to the infantry thanks to the great firepower.
