At the beginning of the 19th century, Russian artillery was one of the best in Europe. Military experience from the late 18th and early 19th centuries made it a powerful force. Russian field artillery was armed with 12-pound cannons and unicorns. Guns could fire any type of projectile, but only at visible targets. The unicorn was called an artillery system, combining the characteristics of a cannon and a howitzer.
